PELUM-Kenya KBioC

KBIOC is a Coalition of organisations that are passionate about and represent collective interest in biodiversity conservation. The membership is drawn from civil society organizations (NGOs), farmer organisations, animal welfare organisations, consumer networks, civil society organisation networks, faith based organisations and institutions of learning from all over Kenya

KBioC has attracted a wide range of members from different sectors. The platform also addresses other wider issues which include GE / GMOs, Bio safety and biotechnology; climate change, AGRA and Agro Fuels. KBioC has a membership of 67 members.

The main objectives of the Coalition are:

  • To mobilize and organize farmers, consumers and the public to protect the Africa biodiversity which is under constant threat from exploitation by corporate driven interests.
  • To have the smallholder farmers, consumers, policy makers, legislators and the general public aware of the importance of  a strong biosafety bill that takes the interest of the small-scale farmers, consumers, communities, animals and the earth and all its inhabitants.
  • To enhance the level of knowledge of smallholder farmers, consumers, policy makers, legislators and the general public on the Concerns associated with GMOs and advocate for adoption of other sustainable farming options available.

KBIOC focus is on the following collective interests

  • Ensuring Food security and sovereignty among Kenyans is enhanced
  • Seed security and Intellectual Property Rights (IPR)
  • Animal Welfare
  • Biodiversity
  • Environmental sustainability
  • Consumer/Farmers’ rights
  • Mitigation and adaptation to climate change
  • Safe food and water
  • Fish farming
